J antennas are weird, just plain spooky to me - you are basically shorting
your coax cable across about 19 inches of copper pipe - dead short ...
I mean, sure it works, but then I think about laying a copper pipe across a car
battery - not sure I want to do that to my transceiver.
Some history and info on J antennas: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J-pole_antenna
My first attempt at a J antenna I am going to call a success, with a few quirks ...
Frequency | SWR | |
144.0 | 1.54 | |
145.0 | 1.90 | |
146.0 | 1.89 | |
147.0 | 1.18 | |
147.2 | 1.04 | |
148.0 | 1.80 |
That would work great for repeater around 147 Mhz, but not good coverage over the whole band for general use.
